The NN/LM SCR is offering the free workshop Will Duct Tape Cures My Warts? Examining Complementary and Alternative Medicine at The Texas Medical Center Library in Houston, TX on Wednesday, November 9, 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM.

The goal of this class is to increase understanding of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Participants will learn the history of CAM and its impact on medical practices. They will learn how CAM is used, how to avoid “bad science” and how to look up evidence of the effectiveness of CAM therapies. Learning activities will include forums, chats, viewing web presentations, and assignments.

This class is free and open to the public. It is approved for Continuing Education credit and the Consumer Health Information Specialization from the Medical Library Association.

Topics will include a wide variety of issues such as:

We will have a keynote speech, informal round tables, and a panel discussion with representatives from academic, public, special, and K-12 libraries. After the Forum we are offering tours of several nearby libraries.

The event will be at Rice University’s Duncan Hall and this year we have individual classrooms for each of the round-table discussion groups. It will be a great opportunity to meet colleagues from other Houston-area libraries and learn about some of the most challenging issues facing our profession today.

Discovery Day Camp

This free, half-day event will be held on Friday, June 10, 2011 at the University of Houston in the M.D. Anderson Library's Elizabeth D. Rockwell Pavilion from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm, with light refreshments and registration beginning at 8:00 am. Discovery Day Camp will introduce the fundamentals of next-generation discovery and provide a unique opportunity for attendees to discuss the unique teaching, technology, and support aspects of discovery tools in a roundtable format.

Discovery Day Camp is intended for libraries that have a discovery platform in place or want to learn more about them. Attendees are encouraged to bring their experiences and questions to share. No prior experience with web-scale discovery tools is required.

University of Houston Traffic Alert

Beginning at 6:00am on Saturday, April 2, 2011, the northbound lane on Cullen Boulevard between entrance 13 and entrance 14 will be shut down for construction. The northbound traffic will be diverted to the southbound lane on Cullen restricting to one lane each way.

All lanes of traffic are scheduled to reopen on Sunday, April 3, 2011 at 7pm.
Please obey all traffic control signage and traffic control officers during the construction.
It is strongly recommended that you consider using alternative routes to avoid any delays.

The SLA Texas Chapter is sponsoring TWO $1,500 travel stipends to attend the 2011 SLA Annual Conference in Philadelphia, PA, June 12-15, 2011. The stipends are awarded to defray conferences expenses for registration, airfare, and hotel. The University of North Texas Library & Information Science Students’ Association Houston (UNT LISSA-Houston) is holding a photo essay contest. The theme of the contest is “Picturing the Future of Libraries,” with photos envisioning what the libraries might look like in 5, 10, or even 100 years from now.

This contest is open to all University of North Texas students currently enrolled in the Library & Information Sciences Program who reside in Texas counties of Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, or Waller.

Photos submitted will be ranked by your fellow students, and the top three ranked photos will win prizes and be published in the Texas Library Journal Magazine.

Truman G. Blocker, Jr. History of Medicine Fellowship

The Moody Medical Library of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston is pleased to offer the Truman G. Blocker, Jr. Fellowship to support research related to the history of medicine conducted at the Moody Medical Library.

The Truman G. Blocker, Jr. Fellowship will provide between $2,000 and $4,000 per year to support travel, lodging and incidental expenses for the period between September 1, 2010 and August 31, 2011. Upon completion the recipient will deliver a paper at the University of Texas Medical Branch outlining the research, provide an expense report and a copy of the final research product. The University of Texas Medical Branch also reserves the right to post excerpts from the work, a photograph and biographical material of the Fellow on our website http://www.utmb.edu/.

The fellowship proposal must demonstrate that the Truman G. Blocker, Jr. History of Medicine Collections contain resources central to the proposed topic. These collections consist of over 18,000 titles and 10,000 pamphlets and reprints documenting the development of Western medicine and allied sciences. The Moody Medical Library’s holdings of books printed prior to 1501 place it among the top medical sciences libraries in the United States. Collection strengths include fundamental and secondary works in anatomy and surgery, anesthesiology, immunology, and occupational medicine. The Titus Harris Collection of the History of Psychiatry maintains over 4,500 volumes and is considered one of the most comprehensive accumulations of works on the subject.

The archival collections housed at the Moody Medical Library are among the largest and most significant in the history of the biomedical sciences in the southern United States. These collections provide records of state and national organizations, and professional societies in medicine and related fields in addition to the private and professional papers of University of Texas Medical Branch faculty, staff, students and alumni. While preference will be given to applicants who live beyond commuting distance of Galveston, all are encouraged to apply, including graduate students. Applicants should submit a fellowship proposal outlining the subject and objectives of the research project and historical materials to be used, (not to exceed 2 pages), a project budget including travel, lodging and research expenses, curriculum vitae and two letters of recommendation by November 1st, 2010. Award decisions will be made by December 1st, 2010.

Field trip to the Barbara Jordan collection

LISSA and the UNT Department of Library and Information Sciences joined in the celebration of Black History month with TSU in our field trip this Saturday. Bernard Forrester, TSU archivist and coordinator of special collections, welcomed us to the archives and lectured as we explored the amazing Barbara Jordan collection, the traditional African art collection, and the TSU archives. Bernard also shared about his trip to the inauguation in January, and reviewed the exhibits of memorabilia from the inauguration and exhibits celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the NAACP.

Barbara Jordan (1936-1996) was the first African American woman to serve in the Texas State Senate; she was the first African American U.S. Representative from Texas and the first African American to deliver a keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention.

All School Day a Success!

On Saturday November the 1st the Rockwell Pavilian at the M.D. Anderson Library at U of H's main campus was filled with LIS students, library professionals, and our own Dean Herman Totten and Houston Program Director Dr. Ana Cleveland as we learned about funding and development tools for information professionals.

Dr. Bill Moen addressed the crowd on the importance of research in LIS education and practice, and Karen Vargas and Michelle Malizia taught a grant-writing seminar with important tips on succeeding in obtaining funds for library programs. (Karen Vargas will be teaching the new User Education class in Houston in the spring.)

The speakers were wonderful, and we had two special moments celebrating 1) Dean Totten, who was named Dean of the new College of Information, Library Science, and Technologies and 2) Dr. Ana Cleveland, who was awarded the prestigious Regent's Professorship. And as usual, everyone enjoyed reconnecting with student and alumni friends. Dr. Ana and Jodi sent us all home with treats to exercise our minds (puzzles and games such as Sudoku and dominoes.)

Exciting Intellectual Property Course Coming to Houston!!

Dear Houston Area Students,

We have an exciting course opportunity to announce for Fall 2008! Intellectual Property for Information Professionals is being taught once again, and you don't want to miss the chance to take the course. This class would be beneficial for all types of information professionals - not just legal librarians. Keep in mind that intellectual property is a hot topic in our field.

The instructor for the course is Mon Yin Lung, Associate Director, University of Houston O'Quinn Law Library. She holds a JD from the University of Kansas and a MSLS from Lousiana State University. Most importantly, she has many years of experience in law libraries, and she enjoys teaching.

The course is taught in a blended format and meets on the following dates 9/13, 9/27, 10/11, 10/25, 11/8, & 12/6 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on the University of Houston Campus.

The course will introduce you to legal issues and information resources related to lintellectual property as well as address legal issues related to libraries and librarians.

Thanks to everyone who came out to All School Day this semester. For those who couldn’t make it, stay tuned for a later posting with more information about the day. We met up at the University of Houston, heard from some great speakers and had some delicious BBQ for lunch. Dean Totten was presented with three birthday cards full of signatures and a special cake made of mini cupcakes formed into a 7 and 0.

The professional development theme was Advocacy, but the accompanying idea for the day was to keep a healthy heart. Red dress pins were given away at sign-in along with information from the American Heart Association and at each table the centerpieces (a work out DVD, pedometer, water bottle and a jump rope) were gifted to whomever’s birthday was closest to April 5th. As always, a raffle took place before lunch for those in attendance.

Calling all Houston-Area Students!

There is still time to RSVP for the Houston All School Day for Spring 2008. This semester’s All School Day will be Saturday April 5 from 9:00am-1:30pm in the Elizabeth D. Rockwell Pavilion in the UH M.D. Anderson Library. The topic for this All School Day is “No Library Left Behind: The Power of Advocacy”

Not only is this an opportunity to learn something great about keeping our profession visible in the eyes of those who approve our budgets, it is a chance to network with fellow Houston students and local professionals while enjoying a free meal. Lunch will be followed by a Town Meeting and Advising with Dr. Ana Cleveland and Jodi Philbrick.

On a special note, we will also be celebrating Dean Totten’s 70th birthday! So make plans to come out to wish our awesome dean a happy birthday and show him how much we appreciate all he’s done to support the Houston program!

I just wanted to take a minute and introduce myself- Dara Flinn, your new Houston LISSA secretary, and I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to get the opportunity to serve you all in the Houston area and work with the very gifted Athena Jackson, Julia Mergele, Art Spanjer, and of course Dr. Ana. My background is in business: undergrad in Finance, Master’s in Accounting (Tax.) After a number of years working as a CPA in corporate tax, I decided I wanted to have a little more fun- see people, do creative things, expand my vision- so I started my Master's in Library and Information Science this semester. (The truth is that I would be a full-time student forever if I could afford it!) My focus at this time is academic libraries and maybe archives- I’m enjoying everything I’m learning, so it’s hard to narrow it down.

Spending time with many of you at the West Houston and Downtown mixers, the All School Day, and of course the spring Web Institute has shown me how much I have to learn- there is so much talent and passion and experience in our class. I was thrilled when I received word of having been awarded the ACRL Library School Student Scholarship to attend the ACRL Conference in Baltimore last month. I made my travel/lodging plans, downloaded the itinerary for the event, and started to plan my journey. [By the way, take a look at the headliners. They were fabulous speakers, all~]

I chose to attend panel discussions covering a wide array of topics, such as ways to get next-gen librarians into the field, a discussion on blended librarianship, up-to-date analyses of burgeoning institutional repositories, special collections’ roles in faculty support, and social networking. I could not possibly do justice to the presenters, their topics, and the breadth of their knowledge in this small blog entry; but, I will say, each panel was chosen due to my own interest in the topics. I came away from every one having a better feel of the pulse of many activities in which I hope to some day take part.

Outside the meeting rooms, I meandered through the vendors section, chatted with various reps about their products, bumped into people I met in sessions (who were always gracious to this budding librarian), and noshed on the free food. I also visited the lively poster presentations. It was a big crowd to navigate through, but well worth the effort: superb fodder for various and sundry topics related to academic librarianship.

I also attended the REFORMA Round Table Discussion. I met an amazing group of active librarians exploring ideas about identifying, recruiting, and retaining Latino/a academic librarians. It was a candid and thoughtful discussion, and I felt at ease sharing my opinions as it relates to my small slice of life. Just to let my fellow distance-learning readers know, I made sure to explain that recruitment needs to go beyond the institutional walls and out to a student population that may be spread far and wide.

ACRL also made the effort to make new attendees, like me, feel welcome with a New Attendees breakfast and mixer. There were tables and balloons (yes, I’m a sucker for carnivalesque flash!) and every conceivable ACRL group was represented and ready to discuss their issues/foci with new attendees.

As an added bonus, by being a Scholarship Recipient, I didn’t have to scurry to the keynote addresses: we had saved seats in the front. I felt a rush being able to be up close and personal with Michael Eric Dyson, making eye-contact with the infectiously hilarious John Waters, and feeling in the presence of greatness being so close to Nina Totenberg. Yay, NPR!

Throughout the event, I felt welcome and invigorated by the professionals in the field of academic librarianship. I cannot express enough how important it is to get a feel for this profession while we are still students. From calling a local librarian and requesting a chat to joining a professional organization and attending its conference, you cannot go wrong in getting your feet wet as early as possible...

West Houston Mixer Recap

Tuesday night we had a blast at our west Houston mixer. Our LISSA officers met up with two new students and one UNT-SLIS alumna at Panera Bread to discuss librarianship and life. We talked about the job market here in the Houston area, the President’s dinner, and the All School Day (both the date change and the theme). It is obvious that our Houston students are very busy with their jobs and families, but it was great that some of them took the time to come out and mingle. Interestingly the gamut from public, special, academic, & school libraries were of interest to each attendee. We had the entire buffet of programs in one sitting. What a great opportunity to find shared and differing views on careers and studies!

Our next Houston LISSA mixer is scheduled for March 8th 2007 at the La Madeleine’s in Rice Village!

Hummus, falafel and baklava..

LISSA officers, Nancy, Veronica and Michelle met at Dimassi's for a fun gathering along
with former officers Monica and Poom.

We started off with shocked surprise to see: Dr. Ana!

She came down to Houston to attend the LISSA meeting prior to our social.

The LISSA-Houston team hosted an informal social, Friday night, at Dimassi's (Mediterranean Cafe) in the Rice Village (2401 Times, Houston, TX) for fun, falafel, and fascinating tales from ALA Annual Conference and the Spectrum Leadership Institute. Veronica handed out some great tips on resumes and PhDs along with all one ever wanted to learn about scholarships available for LIS students or LIS professional organizations.

Twas great to see alums, Somer Newland and Jimmy, Bob Bartlett, John Ronald, Janey from HPL, UH Librarians Steven and Rafal, Dr. Don, Jane Q Public... Amy Coffin(our adopted alum), and Alex.

We managed to follow the agenda:

Luckily we ended up at the Harp, and watched Rafal beat Steven and Janey, all night long at darts, first using his right hand, then left! Nancy selected some great tunes, among them Mellow Yellow.

Get That Job and Love it!

Presentation given by Barbara Kemp, assistant dean for public services, and Damon Camille, training, assessment and statistics coordinator, University of Houston.

Resume -- Counter to popular wisdom its okay to have more than one page provided information is relevant to the profession or particular position. (This may be especially true if you are coming with prior work experience from a different industry.) Use strong words and don’t sell yourself short. Don’t list all your courses as that information can come from your transcript, but do include tangible products from courses, such as web sites if you developed them.

Organizational Culture – successful strategy for any career path is to understand your organization’s culture. You can do this in a number of ways.

Listen: to what people say; discover the myths and legends of the work place to determine what is considered important. Look around, see who the leaders are; how people dress, when they come to work, leave, time for lunch… these are some of the basic behaviors of the group. Observing them will help you learn to fit in.
Learn: read the mission statement; what an organization has taken the effort and time to write down and codify is important. This gives clues to the culture and if you are interested in the environment.

Finally, be a team player and stay positive. To become a valued member of any organization takes time and effort, but these insights will help you adjust to an organization’s culture and help decide if it’s right for you.

Panel discussion on "Cool Jobs."

This discussion was particularly illuminating for those interested in business libraries. A nice change, as these types of special libraries are less talked over in librarianship forums.

Basic plusses given for corporate libraries include: relatively better pay than school or academic librarianship, dynamic working environment, and larger spending budgets.

Basic downside may be long hours as typical in the corporate world; libraries are usually composed of a very small staff – one professionally degreed head librarian with support staff of two or three nonprofessionals or graduate students.

Basic advice for locating a job in corporate world: Networking! Library jobs may be referred to in nontraditional terms, such as information specialists.

Favorite Quote: “We eat our own Dog Food” – given by Margaret Carroll describing Microsoft philosophy about testing and using their own products before they are released to the general public.

"Opening Day" at TLA

It was a beautiful day at the TLA conference. The weather was cool with surprisingly low humidity -- lovely, if a bit gray.

The morning opened with General Session I, in which our own beloved Dean Herman Totten received a TLA Lifetime Achievement Award. CONGRATS to Dean Totten!!

The presentation by Julie Andrews Edwards, renowned children's author as well as celebrated actress and singer, was also a memorable event. The crowd cheered when she described her celebrity as a tool for advocacy.

UNT-SLIS alumna Michele Lucero mediated a panel discussion on "Cool Jobs." Panel members included aviation librarian Ginny Jarvis; Judy Glick of Amigos Library Services; and Microsoft library manager Margaret Carroll. The questions discussed ranged from What is the coolest thing about your job? to How hard is it to get a job in a corporate library?. The speakers provided a wide range of perspectives from special industries, helping the session participants to see career opportunities beyond traditional public and academic library environments.

The Genealogy Round Table held two sessions on researching common genealogy reference questions and developing search strategies in the HeritageQuest database. Some of the resources shared were:

The Book Cart Drill Team Challenge was a ball. The Book Divas of CyFair ISD rocked the competition with their neon pink wigs and saucy choreography. All the teams showed lots of creativity, inspiration, and enthusiasm. It was a laugh and a half. What a fabulous way to trash any myths that librarians are boring people!

Houston LISSA also hosted a late lunch get-together for UNT-SLIS students and alumni, and we had a great turnout of friendly faces. Poom Taylor, Monica Rivero, and myself were joined by various SLIS students and alumnae, including Michele Lucero, Somer Newland, Paige O'Neal, Lisa McNamara, Amanda Pape, Susan Brasseux, Nancy Goralski, and Theresa Holden. (People were coming and going and I was up and down, so if you were there and I have not managed to include your name, I apologize!!) I hope we see many more of you at our coffee/snack meet-up Thursday from 3-4! Join us in the Cafe on the first floor of the Hilton of the Americas.

The exhibit hall was a zoo, a frenzy of color and sound, an overwhelming forest of vendors and information and free goodies. Publishing houses, software companies, universities, database providers -- something for everyone in any area of information science. Of course, since this is Erin speaking, I feel compelled to highlight the fact that NASA has a booth in the exhibit hall! They're providing lots of great handouts, stickers, and posters to advertise the wonderful wealth of education materials they provide. If you're attending, be sure to stop by their booth. If you're not attending, check out their website at nasa.gov: they've got images, trivia, experiments, lesson plans, and all kinds of content for all educational levels. If you are a school librarian or otherwise work with kids who might be interested in space, check out NASA's education resources; you won't be sorry.

Hey, Houston SLISers,

This is Houston LISSA President Erin Dorris, reporting on the 2006 TLA conference, held at the George R. Brown Convention Center in sunny, humid Houston, Texas!

Today a series of pre-conference workshops were held, ranging in subject matter from LoT to genealogy to digitization. Myself and several other UNT students attended the fabulous pre-conference session entitled "Digitization: Planning to Preservation," spearheaded by UNT's own Cathy Nelson, Dreanna Beldon, and Mark Phillips. Most topics were discussed in the context of The Portal to Texas History, but were widely applicable to any digitization project.

Mark Phillips touched on a variety of subjects, including hardware and software for creating digital images; some considerations in selecting a digital assets management system (DAMS); metadata creation workflow; digitization project workflow; and metadata quality control.

Dreanna Beldon gave an excellent discussion on grant proposals for funding digitization initiatives. She touched on copyright restrictions and other legal issues; the selection criteria for digitization used by the Portal to Texas History; and the various scanning hardware employed in the UNT Digital Projects lab. She also provided some discussion of UNT's process for hiring students to work on digital projects (we got a fascinating handout on this topic).

For March 2006, the featured resource is the Library Science Collection of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission:

Texans can register online at the TSL LSC website to borrow materials from this vast library science collection. This is a useful resource to help LIS students find and access informative materials which are unavailable through the UNT library or the students' local libraries.

Most materials can be be borrowed for four weeks with renewal upon request. High-demand items are loaned for three weeks only, non-renewable. Borrowers are not fined when items are overdue, but when an item is six weeks overdue, the borrower will be issued an invoice for the replacement cost of the item.

But We Could Have Told You That!

It was very pleasant to hear the compliments about Dr. Cleveland(s) and UNT-SLIS that the UH Dean of Libraries, Dana C. Rooks, gave last Friday. To quote an earlier posting:

She [Dean Rooks] stated that the library owed much to Dr. Ana and Dr. Don, who have significantly supported it in many different ways, one of the most important being the strong Houston program. "All of you know the importance of the UNT-SLIS program here, either directly or indirectly," she said, going on to comment on the high caliber of UNT-SLIS graduates.

Dean Rooks' remarks were made during her welcoming speech for a reception and tour attended by visiting librarians. The reception and tours are part of the ongoing program "Celebrating University of Houston Libraries". If you haven't checked out the M.D. Anderson (main) library at UH recently, then you've been missing out on something good.

I only wish Dr. Ana and Dr. Don could have been present to enjoy the reception (decorated with the loveliest of orchids, roses, and irises--which they donated), and to hear the praise and applause that they so greatly deserve.

What to do? what to do? Have received suggestions of different venues
(Black Lab seems to be a fav). Different time? and/or day? But did have

A Very Social (and Diverse) Weekend

One of my favorite aspects of going to school while living in Houston is the incredible variety of library school students; the incredible variety of librarians; and, the incredible variety of things to do. A good illustration of that is the social calendar for this weekend. This Sat. LISSA is having a social at the UH Pizza Hut. It starts at 4:00 p.m., not long after Alex Simon's 5600 study group session. I'm looking forward to meeting some of the new students (actually, there are no "new" students--only ones I haven't met!).

On Fri. night some of the UH librarians are gathering at the Alabama Ice House, almost a Houston landmark. Suffice it to say everyone should go at least once just to have the experience. The UH crowd is a pretty cool one--no bores allowed. Great way to (the "n" word) while having a lot of fun. It was great of Poom to get the welcome mat put out for us non-UHers.
